: Red Guards overrun Winter Palace at 0100 hours. c.1,800 Red sailors arrive by train from Helsinki. During the Bolshevik coup d'état in Petrograd. M. Vladimir Lenin and M. Leon Trotski assume power. Former succeeds M. Aleksandr Kerenski as Premier (actual title: Chairman, Council of People’s commissars); and latter succeeds M. Mikhail Tereshchenko as Foreign Minister (actual title: Commissar for Foreign Affairs)(see 13th, May 16th and August 6th). Military Revolutionary committee cables all fronts to accept revolution or face arrest. Red troops occupy Kremlin in Moscow but Cossacks retake Minsk. Revolutionaries announce "an immediate democratic peace" their first objective.
