: Battle of Polygon Wood ends (see September 26th). German attack repulsed north of Menin road between Tower Hamlets and Polygon Wood.
Champagne: Preparations for German attack east of Reims broken up.
Verdun: Violent artillery duel on Verdun front.

Eastern Front
Dvinsk
: Intense artillery duel in Jakobstadt region.
Bukovina: Artillery stop fierce Central Powers’ attack 7 miles north of Romanian frontier.
Bulgarians attack Romanians north of mouth of Buzeu river.

Italians repel continued Austro-Hungarian attacks on San Gabriele.

Naval and Overseas Operations
Italian airmen bomb vessels in harbor of Cattaro.
Mediterranean: Local convoys start, through convoys by October 30, up to three per week from October 15. Indian Cape trade diverted to Port Said for through Mediterranean convoy (first two lose 5 ships, but next four unscathed). Japanese mainly escort troopships.
